DIAMOND COLOR

Diamond color refers to the presence—or absence—of body color within a diamond. The GIA D-to-Z scale begins with completely colorless diamonds and progresses through increasingly noticeable traces of yellow or brown. Subtle differences in color can influence both appearance and value.

WHAT IS DIAMOND COLOR?

Diamond color measures the degree to which a diamond appears colorless. For white diamonds, less visible body color generally means a higher color grade. The internationally recognized D-to-Z scale begins at D, representing the highest level of colorlessness, and gradually progresses toward more noticeable yellow or brown tones.

THE D–Z COLOR SCALE


Diamond color is graded by comparing a stone under controlled conditions to master stones of established color. The scale begins at D, representing exceptional colorlessness, and continues through Z as increasingly noticeable traces of yellow or brown become visible.

  • D–F — COLORLESS


    The highest color range, with little to no visible body color. These diamonds offer an exceptionally icy, bright appearance.

  • G–J — NEAR COLORLESS


    Very subtle traces of color may be present, often difficult to detect without direct comparison. This range can offer an excellent balance of appearance and value.

  • K–M — FAINT


    A faint warm tone becomes more noticeable, particularly when compared beside higher-color diamonds.

  • N–R — VERY LIGHT


    Noticeable yellow or brown body color is present and becomes part of the diamond’s visual character.

  • S–Z — LIGHT


    Color is clearly visible, with increasingly apparent yellow or brown tones toward the end of the scale.

HOW COLOR APPEARS IN JEWELLERY

A diamond’s perceived color can change once it is set into jewellery. Metal color, setting style and the amount of metal surrounding the stone can all influence how warm or colorless a diamond appears. The same diamond may look different in white gold, yellow gold or rose gold.

CHOOSING COLOR FOR YOUR SETTING

The ideal diamond color grade depends on more than the stone alone. Metal color, diamond size, setting style and overall design can all influence how color is perceived. A higher color grade is not always necessary to achieve a beautifully white appearance; the goal is to find the right balance between visual beauty, design and value.
